To Treat or Not to Treat…

…THAT is the Question

That title (and pic!) got your attention right? There is something about the word “Treat” that evokes some serious emotion! For some people it’s fear…for others it’s sheer joy. I think I fall right in the middle of the two. Whatever you might feel I’m going to break it down for you today. Well, I’m going to at least share with you what works for me.

This last year of maintenance has been a HUGE lesson in balance and boundaries. I’ve learned that “depriving” myself is actually not a bad thing. Yep, that’s right I said it. I feel like the diet industry is always saying “don’t deprive yourself”, because it will lead to binging. I agree & disagree with that statement. Let me explain. Basically, I still want to eat a cupcake for breakfast instead of egg whites…EVERYDAY!! I know that I will struggle with food choices the rest of my life…it’s just a fact. It’s taken some time, but I’m ok with that. Everyone has a cross they carry daily & this is mine. So, I get up every morning & I choose the egg whites. I do this because I know it will yield the results I’m looking for…AND I know it gives my body what it needs. Call it what you will, but this is “depriving” my desire for the cupcake. I choose to look at the word “deprive” as positive because I have found POWER in those choices. Every time I make a good food choice…even when I don’t want too…I gain strength & power over my weakness. I know that I’m a food addict & just like an alcoholic I will struggle with this till I die.

Ok, this is a blog about treats right? Now, does this mean I’m never going to have a cupcake ever again? Ummmm….NO WAY! Everyone needs treats in their life!!! That being said…it’s my opinion that if you have ever had a weight problem…like me…we have to be a little more strategic. (at least in the beginning) I try to always stay present while I’m eating…no more mindless decisions in that department. So, Hannah & I decided very shortly after The Biggest Loser that we would in fact have treats, but we would plan them. That’s right I schedule my cupcake liaisons…no seriously, I put it in my calendar.

I know it sounds a little crazy & controlling…but hear me out. How many times have you had a treat on the fly? Even if it was totally deserved & maybe it was the first treat in a long time…you felt guilty after…right? Right. You probably immediately thought…”that wasn’t worth it” or “Ugh, that was so many calories” or my favorite “why did I do that”! Trust me that is NO way to live. Hannah & I have found that by planning out our treats really allows us to not only enjoy them, but there is no guilt because it was planned for! How often you decide to treat yourself is up to you…but plan it out. We usually have a treat once a month…that might change over time, but for now it works really well. It gives me something to work towards. Remember it’s a TREAT…think about what you really want…don’t make it just an after thought. I literally keep a running list on my phone…I’m not kidding. If I see something throughout the month that looks amazing it goes on the list. That way when treat time rolls around I go to the list and pick what I really want. If I’m waiting a month for a treat I’m not wasting it on a candy bar from the gas station. Just sayin!

So, go forth and TREAT yourself…but plan it out. If this is a new concept for you try it & let us know what you think. Tell us in the comments what you think about treats! OH, and my favorite….let’s chat about our favorite treats!! I’ll go first…I love double chocolate cookies from Levain Bakery here in NYC!!! Yummo!!! Now your turn…and GOOOOO!

Big Love,

Olivia xo

A good music playlist is just as important as the workout itself. Music will motivate, inspire, and give you a good butt kicking when needed! We guarantee that great music will push you to workout 150% harder than without it. Think about it….how many times have you taken a group fitness class & although the workout was good you left not liking it because the instructor played El Crappola music? (yes, that is the technical term) Anyway, you get where we are going with this.

There are so many places these days to obtain great music.  iTunes on its own provides more musical fun for your ears than they could ever take in in a lifetime.  Although, we are avid iTunes fans, we are also loving Spotify these days.  You can find all the information for this program at Spotify.com.  Spotify also has an amazing app in addition to their awesome desktop version.  So, for those do you still saying “But guys….I don’t have time to look through that music & I wouldn’t even know where to start…”. Fear not….we have something for you too…we wouldn’t leave you hanging like that!  For you there is an awesome app we both have been listening too lately.  FIT Radio is a great app that provides tons of channels in TONS of genres.  There is something for everyone & they even feature guest DJ’s to mix up your favorite tunes!  The app is specifically designed for exercise so it’s perfect for workouts!  See…soooooo many options to get your groove on.

Ok, since so many of you ask us what we listen to….we thought we would compile a small list for you.  It’s only a top 10 because it basically changes with the wind. ☺. We will update now & again so you will have to stay tuned for new lists!  Ahem…Pun intended.

It’s Time to Treadmill

This is my weekly blog post from the Fitness Magazine Half Marathon Diaries…make sure to read it every week until the big day in April :).

Now that we are less than a month away from the big day, I thought it would be a great time to talk about treadmill training! Have you ever heard of MyFitnessHub? a website that has helped many individual who wants to be healthy and fit.  First off I have to admit something to you…I am a HUGE wimp when it comes to the elements outdoors. I am not joking. If it is sprinkling out I am in the gym on a treadmill. So, as you can imagine that makes it a little tough to get the miles in when you live in NYC and it is like the Arctic Tundra outside. Yes, I admit it…I have done a lot of my training on a treadmill. That being said I wanted to share with you all the details of the treadmill I chose to have in my home.

I keep this cutout close by in case I need even more motivation to get on the treadmill!

From the day I left The Biggest Loser Ranch I have been doing research on treadmills. I spent so many hours running on a treadmill at the ranch that I knew it would become a very important piece of equipment in my maintenance journey at home. After looking at what felt like hundreds of treadmills and reading thousands of reviews I chose the NordicTrack C900 Pro. I really felt like NordicTrack had such a good track record with “at home” equipment. Let’s face it…as much as I would LOVE to have a huge commercial treadmill at home, they are just plain huge & extremely expensive. I’ll just enjoy those at my gym Crunch. 😉 Anyway, I was extremely fortunate that NordicTrack and Sears were gracious enough to gift me with the C900 Pro. It now sits in a proud spot in my living room! Yes, that’s right it’s in my living room…right smack in the middle. I love watching people’s reaction when they come over! I figure you can’t ignore a machine like that when you see it everyday….AND I’m proud to say not only have I used it everyday, but there had never been a single pair of clothing hung on it. Hahaha!

I had a lot of help in the beginning from a running coach who gave me some instructions on how to train for a half marathon in a treadmill and the canary wharf personal training guide and routine. Unfortunately, it would probably not be super beneficial to just run on a flat treadmill for 10 weeks. I knew I had to prepare for those hills in Harlem right? So, the C900 has been amazing for incline work! I find that most indoor at home treadmills feel extremely “rickety”….you know what I mean? That was what sold me on this NordicTrack model…it was the stability! Even on an extreme incline the treadmill stays very still & stable. I love that…and that is saying a lot because it goes all the way from 0-15% incline. There are very few other at home treadmills that have that capability at such a great price. Oh, AND it folds up when you’re done! For those of you spec people out there (type A folks raise your hand) it also has a 3.0 CHP DURX commercial motor & 20″ X 60” tread belt. What does all that mean…well, basically it is comfortably wide & long in addition to being very quiet. I find because Im pretty tall that I love the length of the tread belt…on some treadmills I feel like I’m going to fall off the back!! It has an awesome backlit display with tons of course options and it’s compatible with iFit Live with Google maps. I love the iFit Live because I downloaded all the Jillian Michaels programs & she has been coaching me every step…just like at the ranch! Love that! Lastly, it has an iPod port & speakers which is my favorite part because I love to rock it out when I run.

Seriously, I can’t say enough amazing things about this treadmill I have been using it for over 3 months now so I feel like this is a real tested review. Of course there are tons of other things this machine does, so if you are interested in checking out ALL the specs click on the link below for more information!

Many thanks again to NordicTrack and Sears for this amazing gift…it has been a lifesaver in more ways than one! If you are thinking of buying an at home treadmill go and check the C900 Pro out. You will love it….trust me.
